Project Breakdown: Cleveland’s Fidelity Hotel

The Ohio city finds its rhythm in a charming 97-key property on Short Vincent

Words by: Alissa Ponchione • Photos by Ali Harper and courtesy of the Fidelity Hotel

Once the heartbeat of Cleveland’s social scene, the Short Vincent area thrived in the 1920s, its streets pulsating with jazz clubs and speakeasies. That vibrancy faded over the decades, but in 2019, a new chapter began when operator New Waterloo, in partnership with owner NuovoRE, acquired the 103-year-old Baker Building with a vision to reignite the downtown thoroughfare’s spirit.

The result: the charming 97-room Fidelity Hotel, a transformation led by the Chicago offices of Curioso and Looney & Associates. Saturated hues and textures nod to the building’s past, while materials that patina with time were selected to “evoke the rich history of the city,” says Heather Ciszczon, the former chief development officer at NuovoRE. (Ciszczon joined CoralTree Hospitality as SVP of design and development in April 2025.)

A calming counterpoint to the lively lobby, the front desk is tucked away, offering guests a moment to decompress upon arrival. The intimate atmosphere is shaped by low ceilings, striped flooring—a riff on the original flooring that was uncovered but couldn’t be restored—and a palette of rich purple and pink hues.

Behind the wood-clad desk are two pieces by local artist Lauren Pearce that command attention. To add intrigue, the team also curated a gallery wall that “looks compositionally interesting,” Ciszczon says. Here, 36 pieces that reference Cleveland lore serve as a visual bridge from reception to the adjacent Club Room.

A layered sensibility appears in the sumptuous Club Room, where a large terracotta-toned banquette faces the windows. “We wanted people walking down the street to feel the energy and warmth coming out of this space,” Ciszczon points out. “We didn’t want to tuck it away.”

Color is a unifying thread throughout the property, most notably in the pink velvet drapery, which adds drama to the public spaces.

Just off the main entry, the seating nook—featuring a mix of modern and vintage-inspired pieces—was “intended to be a bit of a landing space that doubles as the lobby lounge,” Ciszczon says. The addition of café curtains on the lower half of the windows offer privacy, so guests don’t feel like they’re “in a fishbowl on public display,” she adds.

The Snug, named because of its low ceiling due to the mezzanine space above, is an extension of the Club Room.

Here, a lush garden mural by fourth-generation Cleveland artist Lari Jacobson winds its way across the walls and ceilings, visible to passersby on the street. The florals evoke wallpapers found throughout the hotel as well as local flowers, while the vine pattern is a reference to Severance Music Center. “My task for Jacobson was to make this room a celebration of everything Cleveland,” Ciszczon says.

The building’s original layout—once home to ground-floor retail—presented a unique challenge for the design team, who aimed to open up the space while preserving some of its historic boundaries.

To establish a sense of flow and continuity, archways and trim pieces were introduced, guiding guests from one area to the next. Sage green tones and eclectic furnishings contribute to the inviting atmosphere. “We were going for a lot of color and pattern,” Ciszczon says.

Color and pattern show up in the accommodations, too. Take the Vincent suite, where teal hues and a floral accent wall create a cozy, lived-in ambiance.

Because standard guestrooms are more modest in size, the design teams chose Roman shades to maximize space and maintain a streamlined look. “We were intentional about making this a more boutique experience,” Ciszczon says, “we wanted guests to savor [every detail].”
